Frequently Asked Questions
LipidScan calculates LDL using the Friedewald formula:
LDL = Total Cholesterol - HDL - (Triglycerides / 2.2)
This formula is accurate when triglycerides are below 4.5 mmol/L (400 mg/dL). If your triglycerides are higher, the calculation becomes unreliable and LDL won't be shown.
Note: Your lab may use a different method (like direct LDL measurement), which can produce slightly different results.
There are a few common reasons:
- Different units: Make sure you're entering values in the correct unit (mg/dL or mmol/L). Check your lab report carefully.
- LDL calculation method: Labs may measure LDL directly, while we calculate it from other values (see above).
- Rounding: Small differences can occur due to rounding during unit conversion.
Status colors are based on clinical guidelines (AHA, NICE, or ESC depending on your setting):
These are general population guidelines. Your doctor may set different targets based on your individual risk factors.
When you haven't entered a measured ApoB value, we estimate it using the Hwang formula:
ApoB = 0.65 × (TC - HDL) + 0.1 × Triglycerides
Estimated values are marked with an asterisk (*). For the most accurate reading, ask your doctor to include ApoB in your next lipid panel.

We support three clinical guideline systems:
- US AHA/ACC: American Heart Association guidelines - most common in the US
- UK NICE: UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
- EU ESC/EAS: European Society of Cardiology guidelines
Choose the guideline that matches where you receive care, or what your doctor uses. You can change this in your Profile settings.
Unit Conversion Reference
Quick conversion factors between mg/dL and mmol/L:
Cholesterol
mg/dL ÷ 38.67 = mmol/L
mmol/L × 38.67 = mg/dL
Triglycerides
mg/dL ÷ 88.57 = mmol/L
mmol/L × 88.57 = mg/dL
